Today, we’re excited to announce that SimpleClosure is partnering with Intuit to help its QuickBooks Workforce customers navigate an often-overlooked part of the payroll lifecycle: what happens when you stop payroll.
Stopping payroll doesn’t necessarily close your state payroll tax accounts. Those accounts can remain open even after a business stops paying employees, leaving business owners responsible for ongoing filing requirements and potentially exposing them to notices, fees, and penalties.
Through our partnership with Intuit, QuickBooks Workforce customers who stop payroll will have access to SimpleClosure to help properly close their state payroll tax accounts and, if needed, navigate the broader business closure process. A customer can securely transfer their company and state payroll tax account details from QuickBooks to SimpleClosure, so they don't have to start from scratch. SimpleClosure then collects any necessary additional information from the customer and manages the state-specific closure process, typically in under 10 minutes.*
The part of payroll that's easy to overlook
Payroll software has made it significantly easier for businesses to set up payroll, register accounts, and hire employees across states. Closing those accounts hasn’t kept pace.
There are more than 100 state tax agencies and thousands of local agencies across the U.S., with requirements that vary depending on where a business operates. When payroll stops, business owners can be left figuring out which accounts need to be closed, where to file, and what steps are required. Many don’t realize they need to formally close the accounts at all.
SimpleClosure was built to make that process easier. What could otherwise take hours of research and navigating different state requirements starts with one guided experience that takes the average customer less than 10 minutes to complete. From there, SimpleClosure handles the state-specific account closure process.
Payroll closure doesn’t always mean business closure
Businesses need to close state payroll tax accounts for all kinds of reasons. A company might stop employing workers in a particular state, change where its employees are located, stop payroll while keeping the business active, move to a PEO, or shut down entirely.
For businesses that are closing, SimpleClosure can also support the broader dissolution process, giving owners a way to manage their payroll account closures and the company shutdown itself.
A better way to close payroll accounts
SimpleClosure has already helped thousands of businesses navigate this process, closing approximately 14,000 payroll tax accounts to date.
Working with Intuit will allow us to bring that experience to significantly more business owners at the point when they need to close their state payroll accounts.
It’s also part of our growing work across the payroll industry. SimpleClosure works with several leading payroll providers to help their customers navigate state payroll tax account closures. These partnerships show that payroll account closure isn’t a problem limited to one platform or one type of business.
Payroll providers have spent years making it easier for businesses to get up and running. We’re working to make the other side of that process easier, too.
Making a complicated process simpler
Rachel Beider found SimpleClosure while canceling payroll after selling her business, Canopy NYC. Payroll closure was just one item on a much longer list of things she needed to take care of while winding down the LLC.
“Selling my business still came with so many loose ends, and figuring out what needed to happen and when quickly became overwhelming. I found SimpleClosure while canceling our payroll as part of winding down the LLC, and it was probably the easiest part of the entire process. The experience was so quick and straightforward that I was surprised when I was already done. Having something take a complicated administrative task off my plate made a real difference.
What's next
We see payroll tax account closure becoming a standard part of the payroll lifecycle. Business owners shouldn’t have to wait for a notice or outstanding filing requirement to find out there was another step they needed to take after stopping payroll.
Our partnership with Intuit is an important step toward making that process easier and bringing payroll account closure to more businesses across the country.
